1. Parking & Spot Utilization (Don't "ICE" the Bay)
- Charge Only, Don't Park: Only occupy a charging bay if your vehicle is plugged in and actively drawing power.
- Avoid "ICER" Behavior: Parking a petrol/diesel vehicle or an unplugged EV in a charging bay, known as ICE-ing, prevents other drivers from accessing a charger when they need it.
- Park Within Painted Markings: Align your vehicle properly so it does not block access to an adjacent charger, second charging gun, or pedestrian path.
2. The 80% Rule on DC Fast Chargers
On public highway DC fast chargers, charging speed generally tapers as the battery approaches a high state of charge. The exact charging curve varies by EV model, battery temperature, charger and other conditions.
- Why Unplug at 80%: Charging speed can decrease significantly as the battery approaches higher state-of-charge levels.
- The Etiquette: When other drivers are waiting at a busy fast charger, consider stopping around 80% if that provides enough range for your journey. If you need 100% range for a longer trip, charging further may be necessary.
3. Handling Queues & Communication
- Physical & Virtual Queues: If you arrive at an occupied station, politely communicate with waiting drivers or use the charging network's queue or booking system when available.
- Dashboard Notes / Windshield Cards: If you need to step away while your vehicle is charging, leaving a small note with your estimated return time can help prevent misunderstandings. Avoid sharing your phone number publicly unless you are comfortable doing so.
- Never Unplug Another Driver: Even if another vehicle displays 100% or appears idle, do not forcefully remove someone else's charging cable. Many EVs electronically lock the connector, and forcing it can damage the vehicle or charging equipment.

- Holster the Connector: Never leave charging connectors lying face-down on dusty, wet pavement. Place the connector firmly back into its holster to reduce the risk of dirt, water exposure, physical damage, or being run over.

- Move Promptly: Once your charging session is complete, safely end the session and move your vehicle when practical, especially when other EV drivers are waiting.
